Our day first Stop was the Randeniya Millennium Elephant Foundation. Our driver gives 2 options with details Pinnewala Elephant orphanage or Millennium Elephant Foundation. We decided to go to Millennium. The MEF charity was founded in August 1999 with assistance of the World Society for the Protection of Animals and has been working continually to improve the care, protection and treatment of elephants in Sri Lanka by providing a place of sanctuary and medical services and facilities.

Our next stop was the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya truly a walkers' paradise. It dates back to 1371 when King Wickramabahu III held court at Peradeniya near the Mahaweli river (Great Sandy River). It was formally established in 1843 by the British. You can’t miss the Avenue of Palms. Also, watch out for a tree which may well beat the Leaning Tower of Pisa in its defiance of the laws of gravity. As you go round the Great cycle, you’ll come across the house of orchids. This is simply a riot of colours and orchids. There is an artificial lake with water plants in the centre of the lake.
